2026 Continuing Care Homes Resident and Family Experience Surveys

We’re inviting some residents and families to take part in the 2026 Continuing Care Homes Resident and Family Experience Surveys. If you are asked to take a short survey, please complete it to help continuing care homes understand what’s working well and where they can do better.

We are surveying residents and families about their experiences in Alberta’s Type A and B continuing care homes this summer. The surveys provide an opportunity to start and support conversations for meaningful improvements.

Who will be surveyed?

  • Residents who have been living in a type A or B continuing care home for at least one month and are cognitively well.
  • Family members who are a friend or family member that lives in Canada and is most involved in the care of the resident.

We are conducting this survey with support from Assisted Living Alberta and continuing care home operators. A contractor, Prairie Research Associates (PRA), will assist in managing the survey process. Trained survey interviewers may visit continuing care homes to help eligible residents complete the survey in an interview format. Other eligible residents will be given a paper survey. Families will be invited to participate in an online survey sent via email.

Why we survey

  • Residents and families have a chance to be heard.
  • Operators receive an individualized report that summarizes overall experiences at their continuing care homes, helping them identify strengths and areas for improvement to enhance residents’ care and service experiences.
    • These survey reports can also be used as contributing evidence for Standard 20, Quality Improvement Reporting, under the Continuing Care Health Service Standards.
  • A provincial report will be created summarizing overall provincial experiences and key takeaways for government, healthcare leaders, and Albertans.
    • To learn more about our previous survey work in continuing care, see our past survey reports here.
